These Are The Two Healthiest Cities in Michigan
Staying healthy is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. You only get one body, so in order to have your longest best life, you have to take care of that body. But, how well are we doing that here in Michigan?
Wallethub released a list of the healthiest cities in the United States. They based the rankings on health care availability, green space, Food options, and how many people work out regularly.
And while several cities in Michigan can pride themselves on their magnificent green space, clean restaurant spaces, and people who love to move, only two made the list.
Before we get to the two cities that are healthiest in Michigan, here are the top ten cities in the United States and why they made the list.
1. San Francisco, CA
Ranking number 1 in Food and Greenspace, it's easy to see why San Francisco is so healthy. They offer a large variety of healthy restaurants, and have over 200 parks according to their city website. If you want to live a life surrounded by people who love to take care of themselves, this is the place to be.
2. Seattle, WA
While Seattle didn't crack the top 5 in any of the categories they were judged in, they stayed within the top ten in every category which makes them consistent across the board. They have lots of parks, healthy food and high quality healthcare options for everyone in the city, so if you're looking for a high overall quality of life, try Seattle.
3. San Diego, CA
While it may not be the most active city, they eat WELL. Ranked #4 in cities with the healthiest food options, if you're looking to go on a diet: San Diego, CA has your back. Plus, lets be honest taco trucks can be counted as "good for you" if you play your cards right. So why not enjoy eating healthy?
4. Portland, OR
Love healthy food and green spaces? Portland is the city for you. They've ranked extremely high in these areas, but they only ranked lower than other cities due to the lazy nature of their citizens as a whole.
5. Salt Lake City, UT
Salt Lake City isn't known for their healthcare or healthy eating, but they love to move and exercise. Their healthy habits when it comes to getting physical landed them a high spot on this list.
6. Honolulu, HI
This tropical city made its way up the list purely due to the incredible greenspaces they offer. It's hard to be unhealthy when you spend most of your days on the beach.
7. Austin, TX
While Texas isn't typically a state that comes up when it comes to healthy habits and eating, Austin stands out from the rest of the state. They scored extremely high on the healthy foods list, thanks to their growing population of newly relocated health conscious citizens.
8. Denver, CO
While Denver sat pretty middle of the road in most categories, they did particularly well when it comes to food and fitness options. So, if you're looking to grab a salad then hit the slopes, this may be the healthy city that works best for you.
9. South Burlington, VT
While South Burlington generally had lower scores across the board, they have some of the best healthcare options in the country. So, if you don't choose to make healthy habits, at the very least they're able to help you with the health complications that come along more efficiently.
10. Washington, DC
America's Capital rounds out the top ten healthiest cities, and they got great scores across the board in everything except fitness. So if you like living a healthy lifestyle without doing the time at the gym, they have a culture that will work great for you.
And here are the two cities in Michigan that made the "healthiest cities" list...
The healthiest city in Michigan is... Grand Rapids.
It's not surprising to find out that Grand Rapids made the top 100 of healthiest cities. We landed in 61st place, due to our fantastic options for all of the qualifying factors.
We have lots of green spaces along the Grand River and at all of the parks around town, we offer world class healthcare options thanks to everyone on Medical Mile, and we have so many local fresh food places, you'd find it hard to eat badly. (don't worry, we know you can figure it out.)
The second healthiest city in Michigan is... Detroit
While Detroit barely made the list, they earned their place thanks mostly due to their healthy food options.
When you search for health food options in Detroit, more than a dozen restaurants show up, bragging about offering options to eat clean. So if you're worried about breaking your diet, a trip to Detroit won't be as much of as hassle as other parts of the state.
