On "Stump the Chumps" this morning (Oct.15th), Joe, from Owosso asked,

"In what year were the Detroit Lions founded?" Joe's answer was 1930. (We said 1932)

The correct answer could be 1929, 1930 or 1934. It all depends.

According to Wikipedia, in 1929, the Portsmouth Spartans, the team that would go on to become the Detroit Lions, started playing football in Portsmouth, Ohio, a town on the Ohio River and right on the Ohio/Kentucky border. The town of Portsmouth decided all the other towns with pro football teams had nicer stadiums, so they funded the construction of Universal Stadium for the Spartans. In 1930, the new stadium prompted the NFL to offer the Spartans membership in the league. In 1934, the guy who owned WJR in Detroit, George Richards, bought the team for $7,952.08, moved them to Detroit and changed their name to the Lions.

They won the NFL Championship in 1935 and three more in the 50s, but since then.......crickets.
