What's Happening With Spare Time Entertainment Center?

On April 28 this year, Spare Time suffered damages from an explosion that occurred just outside the building. There was a trailer that was parked next to the building that had caught fire. Because of this explosion and subsequent fire, Spare Time suffered numerous damages.

Spare Time has a tremendous amount of smoke, soot, and water damage to deal with. Thankfully, all the employees and everyone in the building were fine.

Unfortunately, all this damage is very costly, and according to a Facebook post, Spare Time is working with its insurance company to assess the damages and determine the best path forward.

Additionally, Spare Time suffered another loss shortly after that.

Owner of Spare Time Entertainment Center Passes Away

Owner and family patriarch Mike MacColeman passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 29. This loss is deeply saddening.

Without Mike and with the damages incurred by the fire, the future of Spare Time seems uncertain.

What Locals Are Saying About Spare Time

In the 517 Living Community Facebook group, someone recently asked about another bowling alley in Lansing. However, it's the comment section that bring up Spare Time.

The original post and the comments that mention Spare Time all took place on August 19. One commenter asked, "Anyone know why the bowling alley by Frandor has been temporarily closed for months or what's going on with the Larch Street car wash?" Another commenter said, "Spare Time is closed due to a fire but the owners told staff to move on with their lives and reapply IF they reopen and then within a few weeks the owner passed away. And that's first hand info from management and staff", with a third commenter corroborating that comment.

At this time, the Spare Time website says that they are "temporarily closed until further notice."

I did reach out to Spare Time to comment about a possible opening timeline and they have not responded at this time.

I hope only the best for Spare Time and all its employees. This is such a devastating situation to happen to anyone or any business. I hope that they are able to find a way forward.
