RoboCop Soon Guarding Detroit Streets

11 years in the making and RoboCop is finally back in Detroit. I am referring to the RoboCop statue, which honors the 1987 movie of the same name that.

According to MLive,

The idea for the statue, which honors the movie that took place in Detroit, came about 11 years ago when a Twitter user pointed out that Philadelphia had a Rocky statue,  and Detroit should consider having a RoboCop statue.  That actually was an awesome idea.

At the time there was nothing planed to honor the Detroit based movie, so the idea for a statue took off.

A local filmmaker, Brandon Walley and Jerry Paffendorf, partnered up and started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the statue. That campaign ended up raising over 67 thousand dollars.

Hollywood got involved and that is when things got slowed down. MGM owned the likeness of RoboCop so an exact model of the statue had to be made. Other modifications to the statue, it had to be "neighborhood friendly," that means no gun for the police robot.

The statue was originally going to be on display at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit; however, those plans were scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 11 foot, 2.5 ton RoboCop statue is looking for a permanent home, and hopefully that will be in downtown Detroit.

If you haven't seen the RoboCop movie, I do recommend it.  The movie, which stared actor Paul Weller, was released in 1987 and went on to earn over 53 million at the box office. The science fiction movie has been called by some one of the greatest films ever made. The first film, not any of the re-makes. Stay away from the re-makes.
