MSU Names New President

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees announced on Tuesday morning that they have named Dr. Stanley Samuel, Jr., M.D. (pictured above with Patricia C. Wright from Stoney Brook) as the school's new president.

Samuel, 65, comes to MSU from Stoney Brook University.  He served as president of that institution for the last 10 years.

Dr. Samuel, Jr. will replace interim president Satish Udpa, effective on August 1st, 2019.  Michigan State has not had a permanent president since LouAnna Simon left her post back in January, 2018.  Former Michigan governor John Engler replaced her on an interim basis before he was forced out by the MSU Board earlier this year.  Mr. Udpa replaced Engler as interim president at that time.

“Today, by a unanimous vote, the MSU Board of Trustees has elected Dr. Samuel Stanley as Michigan State’s 21st president, Dr. Stanley is an empowering, compassionate and thoughtful leader, who will work tirelessly alongside our students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees and broader Spartan community to meet the challenges we face together and build our future.”

The vote by the Board was unanimous.  Dr. Samuel is the 21st president in the history of Michigan State University.
