Michigan's Second and Final Free ORV Weekend of 2022 is Aug. 20-21

This weekend, Michigan residents and out-of-state visitors are invited to ride DNR-designated routes and trails for free along with the state's six scramble areas:

Riders will not not need to have an ORV license or trail permit. All other ORV rules and laws still apply, and the Recreation Passport is still required in some areas. You can find more info on ORV rules here.

Ron Olson, chief of the DNR Parks and Recreation Division says,

Free ORV Weekend is a great opportunity for riders to explore off-road trails and routes in the Upper and Lower peninsulas. It’s also the perfect time to test riding out for yourself or introduce friends and family to the sport."

There are usually two free ORV Weekends in Michigan per year, with the next one coming in June 2023.

How Much Is a Michigan ORV License?

Outside of the free ORV weekend, the cost is $26.25 for an ORV license and $10 for a trail permit for a total of $36.25.

According to the Michigan DNR, fees generated through the sale of ORV licenses and trail permits are reinvested back into the ORV system:

These important dollars help fund trail expansion, maintenance and infrastructure improvements, such as bridge and culvert construction and repair, as well as law enforcement and the offsetting of damage created by illegal use.
