A Michigan woman and her family are grateful for the help of local firefighters who have rolled up their sleeves after storms severely damaged her roof.

Nancy is a 10-year cancer survivor. The Hamtramck home where she has lived for more than 50 years sustained severe damage last month when storms devasted parts of the Detroit area. Her daughter Teresa Rush says they've contacted several roofing companies to repair the damage but nothing has worked out so far.

"Several companies have told us they won't service Hamtramck, they will say they're coming out and they don't show up," she tells WDIV-TV in the video below. "And the two that came out were astronomically priced."

One company said it would be $2,000 just to put a tarp on the roof in order to keep it from leaking.

Firefighters to the Rescue

When a neighbor posted about the family's dilemma on Facebook, members of the Hamtramck Fire Department got wind of the story and stepped in to help.

"You need a roof over your head," a firefighter tells the TV station. "This is a lifelong resident of the city, she's battling, and we're trying to battle back for her."

A fire crew worked to secure a temporary tarp over the holes in Nancy's roof. But high winds Monday (8/9) night have damaged the tarp, once again leaving her home exposed to the elements.

The family has since set up a GoFundMe page in order to help the elderly woman with her roof repair. So far, about $1,570 has been raised.
