Michigan Advocacy Group Wants Reduced Solitary Confinement

They say crime doesn't pay, and don't do the crime if you can't do the time. I guess that makes sense. I could never be confined to a cell. I would literally go crazy, and solitary confinement would be torture beyond belief for me.

The Citizens for Prison Reform is trying to reduce the amount of time Michigan prisoners spend in solitary confinement. They, and many folks, think is is cruel and inhumane. The state Department of Corrections says they are already making changes for the better for the inmates according to Fox47news.com

“We’re not just throwing people in there willy nilly placing people in segregation just because they’re a problem or they have an attitude so we throw them in there, they’re out of sight out of mind. That’s absolutely not the case and not how it is handled," said Department of Corrections spokesperson Chris Gautz.

However a group called the Citizens for Prison Reform says NO. They just released data that just over 3,000 prisoners placed in solitary confinement spend more than 20 hours a day in in their cells and almost 400 inmates have been in isolation anywhere from six months to 20 years.

This is what scares me about some inmates in the system. An estimated 2.3 percent to 5 percent of all U.S. prisoners are innocent. Wow. There are about 2.4 million inmates right now, that means that about 120,000 people have had a wrongful conviction, this from wikipedia.com.

This blows my mind, and I wonder if there is a way to change this. I could not even imagine what those people must be feeling. Really sad to think about.
