M-22 is an iconic highway; It's "one of America's most popular scenic routes", it's image is on bumper stickers and t-shirts all over the state, which is probably why the actual highway signs for M-22 have a history of being stolen. MDOT has decided to change up the sign in hopes that thieves won't want the "less attractive" signs.

MLive says that MDOT will be dropping the "M" in the M-22 signs, leaving just the "22". WILX reports that one of the more popular spots for the signs to be stolen are in "Leelanau, the home of vineyards, beaches and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore."

I hope this change works, MDOT spokesman James Lake says that about 90 signs have been stolen in the last three years. Read more about the new signs HERE.
