It wasn't just a severe thunderstorm that came through Lansing on Thursday, May 15th, it was officially confirmed as an EF-1 tornado by the National Weather Service.

While a survey team confirmed that the tornado touched down north of Charlotte and moved to a spot north of Dimondale and near Waverly, there was wide spread damage all across Lansing and the surrounding areas.

Downed branches, uprooted trees, and a whole lot more were left strewn across Lansing homes. If you have some debris from the storm, the City of Lansing is hosting a special drop off this weekend.

If you don't have a lot of storm debris and you feel like you can wait for regular curb collection, that will begin sometime this week (week of May 19th). Here's what you need to know about that special debris pick up:

  • This service will have differing guidelines from yard waste collection and will follow a different schedule
  • Maximum sizes: 8” (inches) diameter, 4’ (feet) length, 50 pounds
  • Residents should contract with a private tree service or debris clean-up company for anything that exceeds the sizes above
  • If possible, please keep storm debris separate from yard waste materials (including bundles and yard waste bags)
  • Debris must be placed at the curb to be collected
  • Branches and other large debris must not block the sidewalk or be in the roadway
  • Only tree-related debris will be collected

Because of the amount of debris caused by the storm, it's expected to take several weeks before curbside collection will be completed.

What's great about Michigan is that it actually gets to experience all four seasons in the year. But just because we have all four seasons doesn't mean that we have to like them all. Case and point; Spring is the absolute worst season in Michigan. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some redeeming factors like the fact that plant life starts to bloom again and that we finally start to see warmer weather after a frigid winter. But that doesn't change the fact that spring is the worst season in Michigan, and we have the receipts to prove it. Take a look at the list below for 15 reasons why spring is just the worst.
