If you've got a few spare minutes today, volunteers are needed to help install smoke detectors as part of the "Sound the Alarm" project in Lansing.  The event runs until 3pm today. It's part of a national event that will take place in over a hundred different cities throughout the United States. The event today in Lansing will mainly focus on the city's southside.

According to WILX, fire departments and other community partners, along with Red Cross volunteers canvass at-risk neighborhoods, install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and provide fire prevention and safety education for the residents. If you're interested in taking part in the "Sound The Alarm" project today in Lansing, you can call 517-484-7461 to register to help and to get more information.
