Ten thousand revelers are expected in Lansing's Old Town this weekend for one of the most unusual celebrations the city hosts all year.

Old Town Krampusnacht happens Saturday, December 6, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. along Turner Street, with lots of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy — although parental discretion may be advised.

In its third year, the Lansing event is already billed as the biggest Krampusnacht event in the entire state of Michigan. Organizers estimate 8,000 people attended in 2024.

What Is Krampusnacht?

What exactly is Krampusnacht? Think of it as Christmas meets the scarier side of Halloween. It's based on ancient folklore that originated in The Alps. Visitcroatia.com summarizes the legend this way: "Those (children) who were good will be rewarded with presents and treats, but those who misbehaved will face his menacing partner, Krampus, the devilish figure who beats naughty children and drags them off to hell!"

Beating of children and/or being dragged off to hell is not expected or encouraged at this weekend's event in Old Town, of course, but attendees are likely to see plenty of ghoulish Christmas-adjacent costumes at the free festival.

What to Expect at Old Town Krampusnacht

Old Town Krampusnacht will feature a Krampus parade, live music, fire performers, photo ops with Krampus, and a myriad of vendor booths. Several bars and restaurants in the immediate area plan to offer food and drink specials as well. Festive or "fearsome" costumes are encouraged, but not required.
