Jaywalking in Lansing? You Might Re-Think That This Week
Jaywalking is one of those things everybody's done at some point. How many of us have gone along with the crowd and done it during big events? And sometimes you stand at the crosswalk feeling dumb and waiting for the light, even though there's absolutely no traffic coming. Right? But, I was surprised to find out that over 100 pedestrians are killed - every year - in Michigan. According to the Detroit Free Press, Detroit had 2,330 pedestrian "crashes" between 2013 and 2017. I don't know how THAT many people are getting hit by cars. People texting while walking or driving? (That's my guess)
In response, police in the Michigan cities with some of the highest number of pedestrian crashes are cracking down on jaywalkers and drivers who make illegal turns and blow through stoplights and stop signs (among other infractions).
This week (Sept. 5th - 11th) "officers will pay special attention" to jaywalkers and drivers who are putting pedestrians in danger in Lansing, Detroit, Kalamazoo and Warren.
So, let's be careful out there. Here's the story.
