Michigan: Don’t Get Caught Doing This on Election Day
Although voting is a fairly straightforward process, there are a couple of rules that must be adhered to if you're planning to cast your ballot in Michigan.
Early voting began last weekend and continues through Sunday, November 3, with election day on Tuesday, November 5. At the time of this writing, more than 2.5 million Michigan voters have already taken advantage of early voting or submitted absentee ballots - that's roughly 35 percent of Michigan's registered voters.
But there are a few things you must do, and a couple of things you absolutely cannot do when you're casting your vote in Michigan.
Can I wear Election or Candidate-Related Clothing to the Polls?
No. Many people are unaware that Michigan law prohibits wearing election-related clothing when you go to vote. This includes hats, buttons, and stickers. Signs, pamphlets, and fliers are also banned.
Can I Take a Selfie When I'm Voting?
No, you cannot cannot hold up your ballot for a selfie or photo. You can, however, take a picture of your own individual ballot in the voting booth.
Can I Return Someone Else's Absentee Ballot?
You may deliver someone else's absentee ballot if you are an immediate family member who has been asked to return a ballot or if you reside in the same household as the voter.
You may return your own absentee ballot and you may also do so if you're a mail carrier (performing official duties) or an authorized election official.
Do I Need to Bring a Photo ID?
You do need to bring a valid form of photo ID in order to vote, but you are not required to present your voter registration card, according to the Michigan Secretary of State.
