The Portage Northern High School choir will be on stage with the band tonight (5/19) at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, backing up the band as they perform the 1984 classic.

Online Voters Chose the Winning School

Choirs from across Southwest Michigan competed to see who would be chosen to perform at the highly-anticipated show. According to Mlive, Portage Northern High School narrowly edged out the Pennfield High School choir in Battle Creek.

Choirs were asked to submit a recording of themselves performing a Foreigner song - Pennfield, however, opted to perform Aerosmith's 'Dream On' for their submission. Our sister station, WRKR in Kalamazoo, handled the online voting and fans chose Portage by a mere two percentage points.

Grateful for a Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity

Chelsea Whiteoak is the choir director for Portage Northern High School. She says she was hoping both high schools' choirs would be able to join the band on stage.

“We are thankful that we are the ones that came out on top, but also a little saddened that Pennfield can’t join us, because that was in the discussion, but only 25 kids get to be on that stage with Foreigner that night,” Whiteoak said. “I’m super excited to have this experience with them and to be able to do something (that) is not normally in their box or wheelhouse.

In the video below, you'll see reactions from some of the students who have been chosen to accompany the band tonight at Wings Stadium.

Choirs from around the country are chosen to accompany the band as they sing 'I Want to Know What Love is' on Foreigner's farewell tour. Each choir receives $500 for performing with the band.
