Every winter it's exciting to see Snow & Ice Fest works of art happening throughout Michigan. This project was a giant undertaking. The detail work in this "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" ice sculpture is unlike anything you've seen before. It looks like a city, or movie set, frozen in time.

Award Winning Willy Wonka Ice Sculpture in Michigan

  • The photographer, Mark Timonen, tells us the fraternity that created this amazing work of art is Phi Kappa Tau. The only fraternity located in Hancock, MI (in the Upper Peninsula or "the rabbit ear"). The rest of the fraternities are located, across the lift bridgem, in Houghton, MI where Michigan Technological University is located.

How long did it take to make the Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory Ice Sculpture?

  • It's a month-long competition fraternities participate in to create intricate, giant works of art. The Men's Divisional First Place Winner was Phi Kappa Tau. Second Place went to Tau Kappa Epsilon. (Each of those took their respective places in the Month-Long Statues Contest, too.)
  • The contest is part of the annual Winter Carnival that happens every February. This isn't the only cool thing they do either. Human Ice Bowling is also tradition. Plus, a royalty coronation, comedy skits, broomball and tons of delicious food.

Congratulations on a well-deserved win.
