A Sandwich with a Pound O’Bacon and More Unique Michigan Meals
POUND O'BACON
How about a pound of bacon – or more – on your sandwich or as a side dish?
Tony’s in Birch Run overloads itself with bacon especially for the Michigan bacon lovers. According to The ‘Gander, “You will not be disappointed. The portions are massive and a pound of bacon or more for $6 that’s a deal. It’s the semi thick cut not the dinky ones you get at most restaurants.”
Definitely worth a visit...

CONEY PACZKIS
American Coney Island in Detroit serves ‘em up!
Yeah, paczkis are yummy, filled with lots of goopy filling: lemon, cherry, blueberry, apple, strawberry, etc. But there is a limit as to how much sweet stuff you can take. This is where the Coney paczki comes in. It’s just what you think it is: a paczki stuffed with Coney filling and hot dogs.
Sound good? Heck, yeah it does! Find ‘em at American Coney Island, 114 W. Lafayette, in Detroit.

DESSERT PASTIES
Where the Coney paczki was for those who wanted a change from the sweet tooth stuff, the dessert pasty is just the opposite. Typical pasties are filled with chicken, beef, potatoes, onions, rutabagas.....and no sweets. Until now.
Instead of the savory filling I just mentioned, the dessert pasty is the opposite. After enjoying a nice fat juicy meat pasty, now you can top it off with a dessert version, stuffed with the fillings you expect to find in a paczki: apple, blueberry, cherry, or whatever fruit flavor is being featured. One of the best places to find these are at Muldoon’s Pasties in Munising.

PURPLE POTATO CHIPS
The Great Lakes Chip Company put these out back in 2019 in partnership with MSU. The purple potatoes came from Kalkaska after an amount of cross-breeding to achieve the blackberry potato. Purple in color, almost like a beet, the chips made from these taters are definitely a seasonal thing, and you’re lucky to find ‘em before they sell out.
They have been seen in Meijer, Sam’s Club, and Costco. If you can’t find ‘em, here’s a link to help you out: https://www.greatlakespotatochips.com/find-our-chips/
When it comes to unique foods, places like California and New York are just mental cases. Michigan’s unique foods have thousands of fans.....and for good reason.
