Thirteen Old Detroit Movie Theaters: 1900-1960
How many film theaters did Detroit total?
Hard to say.
Sure, the large, majestic ones are easy to find and pinpoint in the annals of history, but there were SO many smaller ones. There were tiny theaters down back alleys, dark neighborhoods, sandwiched in-between buildings, in basements, on top floors, in back rooms - many of them nickelodeons or vaudeville venues.
While it is impossible to locate all of these, there are some defunct theaters that evoked grandeur and splendor that have been closed down for decades - and generations.
