Check Your Michigan ID: Thousands Have the Wrong Photo and Birth Date

One of my biggest joys in life is dealing with the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS). The paperwork. The license photo that makes me look like I've been interrogated for 27 straight hours. Really, who needs a relaxing day at the spa when you can go to the SOS office?

Well, thousands of Michiganders are now learning that roughly 8,200 residents have a misprint on their enhanced driver's licenses or state IDs after applying for or renewing a card.

What Went Wrong With 8,200 Michigan IDs

The affected batch was printed on August 26, 2026, by the state's vendor, Idemia. The problem? A generic stock photo and an incorrect, generic birth date appear in the lower-right corner of the cards.

The SOS says those details are placeholders, not somebody else's personal information. For those of us (myself included) who already have enough trouble recognizing ourselves in our Michigan ID photo, introducing a guest star will only add to the confusion.

How Michigan Is Replacing the Misprinted IDs

Here's the good news: WILX reports that corrected cards are being mailed automatically. Affected residents don't need to do anything to receive a replacement.

Need a temporary license or ID while you wait? You can get one online or at an SOS branch. Scheduling ahead is strongly recommended unless spending an undetermined amount of your day near government-office carpeting sounds exciting, in which case just pop in.
