The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking hunters for their deer heads. Usually, when the state wants something from you, it's money. This is a new one.

You may be used to donation drives asking for canned goods, but Michigan has officially entered the "you using that deer head" phase.

The DNR's request focuses on deer harvest in Mecosta, Newaygo, Kent, Montcalm, and Ionia counties during the 2026 deer season.

Testing through DNR collection sites is free, and heads are screened for chronic wasting disease (CWD) and bovine tuberculosis.

Why Michigan DNR Wants Your Deer's Head

CWD is an always-fatal neurological disease caused by abnormal proteins called prions, and there is no known cure. Sadly, that handsome buck's ability to pose for your trail camera doesn't qualify as a medical exam.

The DNR last conducted intensive sampling in these counties in 2019. New samples will help measure how common CWD is and guide future management in Michigan.

Four 24/7 drop boxes are available through January 4, 2027: Haymarsh Hunt Club in Morley, Kent County Road Commission in Walker, Paris DNR Field Office, and Flat River DNR Field Office in Belding.

Be sure to complete your mandatory deer harvest report before submitting a head. Remove the head before visiting, and remove any antlers you want to keep.
