Driving under the influence in Michigan, or any state, is like playing Russian roulette -- but with two tons of Detroit-built steel. Despite the strides made by law enforcement, impaired driving continues to be a serious problem on our roads. This couldn't be more apparent in one Michigan county that not only leads the state in DUI-related fatalities, it's one of America's 21 worst.

When you see the complete '21 Worst' list (keep scrolling), you'll notice Michigan seems out of place. As you'll see, the majority of America's worst counties for DUI-related deaths rest on the west side of the country.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA), in 2022 alone (the most recent year data is available), 9,331 alcohol-related crashes resulted in 322 deaths. For the drug-involved crowd, there were 2,452 crashes and 249 deaths.

Believe it or not, those numbers are an improvement. In 2021, 357 alcohol-related accidents resulted in death. Despite Michigan's statistical improvements, the reality remains grim. DUI fatalities are still a concern, especially around the holiday season.
