Ingham County Parents Should Check Their District’s Cell Phone Penalties
Michigan K-12 students hoping to spend algebra class checking TikTok are about to find out that the state and each school district have other plans. Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, Michigan public school districts and public school academies must have a policy banning students from using wireless communication devices on school grounds during instructional time.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the bipartisan legislation on February 10, 2026, after calling for limits on classroom phone use in her 2025 State of the State address.
Michigan School Cell Phone Rules Will Vary by District
Here's where things get interesting for parents and students: Michigan set the framework for the law, but your local school district gets to decide what kinds of rules and consequences they’ll be serving up.

The state law requires districts to prohibit phone use during instructional time, explain how the rule will be enforced, and post the policy online. Districts can also go further, meaning they can restrict phones during lunch, passing periods, or even the entire school day if local leaders choose.
Required Exceptions Under Michigan’s Phone Policy Law
There are required exceptions for things like medically necessary devices, school-issued technology, special education accommodations, teacher-approved academic use, and emergencies.

So there is no single statewide answer to "What happens if my kid gets caught with a phone?" That part belongs largely to the district. One school may start with a warning; another may confiscate the phone, call a parent, or move to detention and suspension after repeated violations.
