The Manistique Boardwalk, Along the Northern Lake Michigan Shore
There is always time for a Michigan roadtrip...yes, even in winter, if the roads are clear. A favorite destination for roadtrippers is the Upper Peninsula, and here's a place you may or may not have ever visited: The Manistique Boardwalk.
Up on the northern shore of Lake Michigan is this 1.83-mile long 'walk of wood' in Manistique. WOW – what views of the lake you'll get here, especially with the old lighthouse as a backdrop!
The boardwalk also has a pier where you can relax and do a little fishing for trout and even salmon. Plus, there are some picnic areas where you can munch some food as you view out over Lake Michigan.
The boardwalk was constructed in 1991, with some improvements over the years. One of the perks of the boardwalk is reading about the town history of Manistique.
There are signs along the walk that talk about the town, the Upper Peninsula, the surrounding nature, and maybe best of all, the story about the shipwreck of the Carl D. Bradley freighter. It sank back in 1958, losing 33 of its 35 crew members.
And yes, you can visit the lighthouse. The Manistique East Breakwater Lighthouse was built in 1895 and, unlike many old lighthouses, is still being used. Take a look at the images in the gallery below...
