After seven years of construction, hampered by pandemic delays and enough international bickering to make a family reunion look diplomatic, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is finally ready for traffic.

When Michigan Drivers Can Cross the Gordie Howe Bridge

The new Detroit-to-Windsor crossing opens Monday, July 27, 2026. Canada and Michigan announced the date after reaching an agreement supported by the U.S. government, ending the last round of the "will it or won't it" debate.

The six-lane bridge stretches roughly 1.5 miles and connects I-75 in Detroit directly with Highway 401 in Ontario. This means fewer surface-street adventures while your GPS repeats "recalculating" at every turn.

Passenger vehicles will pay $5.75 U.S. per crossing. Drivers enrolled in the Breakaway toll program receive 25% off, dropping the toll to around $4.35. You do not need an account to cross. Cash, debit cards, major credit cards, and digital wallets will all be accepted.

After opening day, the bridge will operate around the clock, with modern inspection plazas on both sides and real-time border wait information available online. Of course, this is an international crossing, so a valid passport, NEXUS card, or another accepted border document is still needed to cross.

One surprise: There is no duty-free shop or gas station at the crossing, at least not yet.

Michigan, we finally have another route into Canada. Just make sure to bring your documents and choose the correct lane, or else you may end up being the cause of the bridge's first international traffic jam.
