The Wild West Town That Sits in the Michigan Wilderness
When it comes to cool places to visit in Michigan, there can never be enough mentions...there are just SO many interesting places and things to see and do.
One of them is the western town of Coopersville in Montmorency County.
Coopersville is NOT a town...it’s a tourist attraction...an old time western town that sits in the middle of nowhere. Seriously. It sits along the dirt trail called Fire Tower Road and is nestled among the trees on the west side of the road.

What Will You Find in Coopersville?
Don’t expect to find rides there...it is an amusement area, but no midway, games, concessions, or roller coasters. Just a facsimile of an 1800s western town – and a darn good one as well.
What is there? You might ask.
Just about everything you’d expect to see in one of those old TV westerns, that’s what: a bank, boarding house, Boot Hill cemetery, brothel, feed & grain store, gallows, general store, gun shop, jail, livery stable, saloon, sheriff's office, trading post, and undertaker, along with a few other little western shops.
Who Created the Coopersville Western Town?
The man who created this was Spike Cooper, who was a huge fan of John Wayne (and other) western movies. So he built the town to appease his fandom. He passed away in 2020.
It’s about 16 miles south of Lewiston but it’s still hard to find. Just GPS 1860 Fire Tower Road and that might help. It is listed on Google Maps, just don’t get it confused with another Coopersville in Ottawa County.
It’s a fun place to take a sidestep to on your Michigan roadtrip...spend the day pretending you’re Marshal Matt Dillon or Long Branch Saloon owner Kitty Russell.
It’s one of Michigan’s simple pleasures that young and old will get a kick out of...
