If you experience "déjà vu all over again" whenever you open your utility bill, that's because Consumers Energy has once again asked Michigan regulators for more money. Apparently, the rate hike treadmill remains fully operational.

According to a press release from the Michigan Attorney General's office, Consumers Energy filed a request with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) on June 2 seeking approximately $456 million in additional electric revenue, a move that would increase residential electric bills by about 9.8%.

What's especially frustrating for many customers is timing. The company is making this request just months after regulators approved a $276.6 million electric rate increase that took effect May 1, 2026. Since 2020, regulators have approved nearly $800 million in annual revenue increases for Consumers Energy. It's also worth noting that as of June 1, the energy giant has resumed charging a premium for electricity use between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. through September 30, as part of its "summer-peak-hour-pricing." Still... not enough. They want more.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says her office will intervene in the case and challenge the request before the MSPC. Nessel argues that Michigan families are already struggling with rising costs and that utility companies continue to file what she describes as inflated and excessive requests.

Her office has made a habit of fighting utility increases, often asking regulators to dramatically reduce requested hikes. In a recent Consumers Energy gas case, the Attorney General sought a 61% reduction that could have saved customers more than $146 million.

Look, nobody disputes that the grid needs upgrades and reliability improvements. Consumers Energy says that's what these increases help fund. But from a customer's perspective, it feels like everytime we get used to one higher bill, another rate case arrives before the ink is dry on the last one.

The MPSC will ultimately decide how much, if any, of this latest request gets approved. Until then, Michigan residents can add "watching utility rate cases" to the growing list of hobbies they never asked for.
