At this current time, there are no remaining Kmart Stores in Michigan. The last Kmart Store that was in operation in Michigan was in Marshall, Michigan. It closed its doors for good back in 2021.
Kmart's History Here In Michigan
Kmart under its new name, not its original, got its start here in Michigan, believe it or not. Back in 1899 as the S. S. Kresge Corporation, which was renamed to Kmart Corporation in 1977.
Back in 1962, the Garden City Kmart would open its door, which was the first to use the "Kmart" name.
Kmart's Michigan Headquarters
From 1962 to 2005, the headquarters for the former retail giant were housed right here in Michigan. Troy, Michigan to be exact.
The former headquarters are currently owned by The Forbes Company, which owns the Somerset Collection, a mall down in Troy, Michigan. The Somerset is a thriving mall in Troy, that actually has two buildings, connected by a walkway over the road below.
No current plans stand for the old Kmart headquarters location.
The Current State Of The Former Headquarters
While, you should avoid entering the property, as it is currently owned, it hasn't stopped people from stepping inside and seeing the old Kmart headquarters.
With that though, we are very lucky to have seen the inside of the old location.
Take a look below of what remains of the old headquarters.
