Driving in Michigan is no easy task.
Between dodging massive potholes that can swallow up your car.
or dealing with all four seasons of weather in one day, Michigan drivers have to be ready for anything.
But even the most prepared driver can be caught off guard by a massive pileup triggered by bad weather conditions that limit drivers' visibility to see what’s in front of them.
Once these chain reaction pileups start, its like a bunch of dominoes that can’t be stopped.

On Saturday the Michigan State Police had to shut down I-96 both ways near Grand River in Portland because of a massive pileup caused by winter weather with white-out conditions.
Thankfully according to MSP, no severe injuries were reported.
After seeing this major pile up I wanted to know if it was the worst traffic accident in the state.
Turns out it wasn't, here is what I was able to find out.
Michigan's Worst Traffic Accident Happened In 2015
In January 2015 nearly 200 cars were involved in Michigan's largest vehicle pileup.
The pile-up happened on I-94 near Galesburg. 76 Semis and 117 cars collided resulting in one fatality.
One of the trucks involved was full of fireworks and started firing them off resulting in multiple injuries
In 2016 five people were tragically killed and a dozen more were injured in Livingston County.
The combination of Black ice and whiteout conditions was blamed for this tragic crash.
Historic Michigan Car Crash Facts
While looking into the worst traffic pile-up in our state's history, I also found some other interesting facts from the past.
- In 1969 Michigan experienced its deadliest year for car accidents. 2,500 people died in car accidents across the state.
- Michigan's first automobile-related death happened In 1902. A wealthy Detroiter traveling in a horse-drawn carriage was hit by an early motorcar.
It's always important to be alert and focused when driving but it also might be a good idea to avoid these dangerous intersections in Michigan.
