Michigan is known for a lot of things - it's the home of the automobile, Grand Rapids used to be Furniture City, USA, and we have an entire festival dedicated to cherries.

However, I recently stumbled across some information from the Michigan Department of Agricultural & Rural Development that took me completely by surprise.

It turns out that Michigan leads the nation in the production of a LOT of different agricultural products. And more than you would think.

Sure - we know that Michigan produces a ton of cherries. We're also pretty big in the apple game. And, Michigan is famously the third-largest producer of Christmas trees in the nation.

But, would you believe that Michigan is also the top producer of several different types of flowers? What if I told you that Michigan is first in the nation for the production of a very specific nut? While most of the things on the list from the Department of Ag were food items/produce - there was one super surprising non-food item on the list.
