West Michigan Retro Resort Crowned One of the Best ‘Classic Motels’ in U.S.

About a hundred years ago, Americans started taking to the nation's new highways in their new automobiles. Motels (a combination of the word "motor" and "hotel") popped up across the U.S. to accommodate these travelers.

These days, of course, there are hotels, sprawling resorts, Airbnbs, and plenty of different kinds of places to stay. However, classic motels are having a moment again, according to Loveexploring.com, with vintage spots getting spruced up for modern travelers, while still having fun retro touches.

The travel publication has named 30 of the best classic motels across the U.S. - and one is in West Michigan!

According to Loveexploring.com The Saugatuck Retro Resort is among the top classic motels in the country. It's not the first honor the motel has received. Last year Reader's Digest named it among the top 17 retro hotels in the U.S.

Established in 1953, the motel's motto is "Come for the night. Stay for the decade."

The Retro Resort is located at 6190 Blue Star Highway in Saugatuck just a few miles from downtown, and a few miles from Lake Michigan.

According to the owners, the remodeled and refurbished motel will coax you "back to a time when muscle cars roamed the roads, cool controlled the airways, and swagger ruled the roost."

The Saugatuck Retro Resort has 22 rooms that "balance simple chic and vintage vogue".

There's plenty to do on the property's shaded five acres with the outdoor grill, shuffleboard, horseshoes, fire pits, hammock, and of course the refreshing pool!
