The Whitney: The Most Haunted Restaurant in Michigan

Is it really a wonder that a place with a ghost bar has been named the most haunted restaurant in Michigan?

To give a bit of history, The Whitney was built in 1890 through1894 for lumber baron, David Whitney Jr. At the time, he was the richest man in Detroit. The building was designed by English architect, Gordon W. Lloyd, who also designed Detroit's Central United Methodist Church, the Wright Kay Building, and the University of Detroit's Dowling Hall.

David Whitney Jr. died in 1900, having lived in the mansion for just six years. His widow, Sara, remained at the residence until her passing in 1917. In 1941, the Whitney Family gave the house to the Wayne County Medical Society.

In 1968, following a massive and costly renovation, entrepreneur Richard Kugh (who had purchased the building seven years earlier) opened The Whitney Restaurant. It was sold to Bud Leibler, a one-time executive at Chrysler, in 2007.

So who is haunting The Whitney? If you guessed David Whitney Jr. himself - yes, as it's believed he died of a heart attack inside the mansion. It's also thought that his first wife, Flora, who passed away in 1882 is among the ghosts in residence. It was, after all, one year after Flora's passing that Whitney married her younger sister Sara...

According to psychic-medium Kristy Robinett,

.... It's actually Flora that haunts the mansion because her sister Sara was the one that got to live in the mansion.

Sightings and odd occurrences throughout the years lead The Food Network to name The Whitney Michigan's most Haunted eatery. According to the Food Network:

The Whitney, a palatial building on Woodward Avenue, is a portal to the past in midtown Detroit. It was built as a private residence in 1893, and after various uses over the years, was transformed into The Whitney restaurant in 1987. On the mansion’s first floor you can sup on the signature beef Wellington in the Music Room or head upstairs to The Ghostbar for dessert and clever cocktails such as The Witching Hour, a martini with a touch of sweetness. Despite its moniker, paranormal activity isn’t limited to The Ghostbar. The elevator has been known to move from floor to floor with no riders, and several guests have spotted a crying woman dressed in white in the third-floor ladies’ lounge. Even the owners’ son had an unexpected memento from his bachelor party here — a ghostly apparition caught in a group photo. Can’t get enough thrills and chills? Check out The Whitney’s monthly paranormal dinners or special ghost adventure events during Halloween week.

TV shows on the paranormal have featured The Whitney, inluding One Detroit on PBS     and Ghost Hunters on Syfy.
