Maybe you didn't even know this spot existed, as its pretty much just a narrow strip of cement tucked between the Amway Grand and DeVos Place, that leads to that Grand River. I know, it doesn't sound like much - but it's about to be!

According to the City of Grand Rapids, the redesigned space will include a covered river overlook, accessibility improvements, added greenspace, seating, snowmelt systems, space for weddings and other events.

Renderings appear to show outdoor fireplaces - how awesome will that be in fall and winter?

The City says their goals are:

  • Create a flexible, four-season space
  • Establish a memorable destination that promotes engagement and inclusion
  • Create a comfortable shared place for pedestrians and vehicles

First proposed back in 2015, the project is set to begin this fall. Construction is set to be completed by fall 2024.

According to WZZM-13, Lyon Square's transformation is costing $12 million. MLive previously reported the Grand Rapids City Commission had approved a request by city staff to borrow up to $12 million to improve the space.
