Russell Dickerson Was Shocked by the Comment Garth Brooks Left

Russell Dickerson probably wasn’t expecting Garth Brooks to show up in the comments when he posted his version of “Callin’ Baton Rouge," on Instagram — but that's exactly what happened.

A few days ago, Dickerson shared a slower, more stripped-down take of Brooks' song on Instagram, and people immediately started commenting about how good he sounded.

There were plenty of compliments, but one comment was obviously going to stand out from the rest.

Garth freaking Brooks.

Brooks jumped into the comments and gave Dickerson one of those compliments that you probably screenshot and keep forever, at least I would.

Brooks commented, "I can’t imagine what it’s like to have that much talent, sincerely...love you pal, g."

I mean... what are you even supposed to say to that?

Especially when it’s Garth Brooks, arguably one of the most talented country artists of our time and beyond telling you how talented you are while you’re covering a song that he helped turn into a massive country hit.

What I like about Dickerson’s version is that he didn’t try to copy Garth’s recording. He slowed it down and gave it a completely different feel, which lets you hear the song in a way you might not be used to hearing it.

And clearly, it worked.

When Did Garth Brooks' 'Callin' Baton Rouge' Get Released?

Brooks released his version of "Callin’ Baton Rouge” in the nineteen hundreds — 1993, to be exact. It went all the way to No. 2 on the country charts in 1994.

The song was originally recorded by New Grass Revival in 1989, but Brooks’ version became the one that a whole lot of country fans grew up knowing.

So Dickerson wasn’t just covering some random song. He was taking on a song that Brooks knows pretty dang well and apparently was able to impress the legend.

Dickerson responded exactly how I imagine most of us would respond if Brooks randomly popped up in our Instagram comments with a massive compliment.

"BROOOO I’M GEEEEKINGG," he wrote.

Getting a compliment from fans is one thing. Getting one from Brooks on a song that he took to No. 2 on the country charts? That’s a whole different level.

Brooks and Yearwood bought their 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom, 4,200-square-foot house in Malibu for slightly less than $5 million in June of 2008. The house itself is fairly modest, but very well-appointed, featuring an open floor plan.

The living room boasts a corner fireplace and multiple sets of French doors that open to the backyard. The kitchen includes marble countertops, while skylights offer plenty of natural California sunlight. The den features floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on either side of a fireplace of white brick.

The backyard is spectacular, featuring a loggia, an outdoor fireplace, a half-court basketball court and elaborate landscaping. The house provides direct access to the world-famous Malibu beach via a set of steps.

The couple sold the house in Malibu in late 2016 for $7 million.
