Lainey Wilson Had to Talk Her Team Out of a 'Joke' Song

Lainey Wilson is an acclaimed singer-songwriter at this point in her career. Fans know what to expect from a new Wilson record, and they love what they hear.

But in a new interview, Wilson admits she once wrote a song as a joke, then had to talk her team out of recording and releasing it.

Why Did Lainey Wilson Talk Her Team Out of a Song?

Wilson was sitting across from me on Taste of Country Nights With Evan Paul when I asked her to be candid and tell me the dumbest song she's ever written that almost got recorded, had it not been for someone on her team stepping in to tell her, "This ain't it."

Wilson responded, "There's definitely been a lot of songs that you write in the moment, really to be funny or whatever, and then there's been times where I wrote a song as a complete joke and they're like, 'Oh my gosh, this song is unreal.'"

She explained that in that moment, she had to be the grounded one.

"I had to tell my team, 'No... this ain't it. This ain't it, it was a joke. We were writing just to be funny, this ain't it. It's just crazy.' But I feel for the most part, we are all on the same page."

Where Does Lainey Wilson Get Inspiration for Her Songs?

Lainey Wilson further expanded on the idea that not every song she writes is meant to be recorded.

"The cream rises to the top," Wilson said.

"There's so many terrible, terrible ideas if you go through the hook book in my phone right now... and my mom will text me ideas; she's like, 'I got an idea, I got an idea, you need to write a song about this boy cheating on you and then kinda take that Carrie Underwood vibe and be like, I gotta bat for that.'"

Wilson said she always has to tell her momma, "Will you please just mind your business and go teach school?"
