Jelly Roll + MGK Drop a Second Duet — Listen to ‘Time of Day’
Jelly Roll and MGK revisit loneliness and self-loathing, but save the heartache in "Time of Day," a new duet on CMA Entertainer of the Year nominees's Beautifully Broken album.
In July, the two men appeared on "Lonely Road," a song released on MGK's platforms. "Time of Day" is not as melodic, but the two men are equally tortured.
"I don’t cry like I used to / Cause I know these tears don’t wash my sins away / I don’t pray like I used to / Cause I don’t think I deserve the time of day," Jelly Roll sings at each chorus.
The full lyrics to "Time of Day" are below. MGK takes each verse over little more than piano.
- Jelly Roll's Beautifully Broken dropped on Friday (Oct. 11).
- It features single "I Am Not Okay," plus previously released songs "Winning Streak," "Liar" and "Get By."
- Last month, MGK told Taste of Country about how he's been received in the country music community. He also impersonated his friend Jelly Roll.
"Time of Day" was written by Jelly Roll and MGK (Machine Gun Kelly). The men refer to a life lived previously that included drugs abuse, alcohol, jail time and more. It's about forever trying to shake that old life and having days where their past swallows them.
In addition to this new MGK feature, Jelly Roll's new album features songs with Ilsey and Wiz Khalifa. In 2023, he released his country debut Whitstitt Chapel, featuring songs with Brantley Gilbert, Yelawolf and Lainey Wilson.
In the interim, he's been a part of songs from Dustin Lynch, Cody Johnson, Post Malone and Jessie Murph.
Here Are the Lyrics to Jelly Roll, MGK, "Time of Day"
Cause even a spotlight or a movie / Couldn’t show the side that I’ve been hiding lately / And lately / They say the old me’s not the new me / But the same me is still inside that I’m containing / Unchain me.
Chorus:
I don’t cry like I used to / Cause I know these tears don’t wash my sins away / I don’t pray like I used to / Cause I don’t think I deserve the time of day.
Listen I’m sorry, since you saw me / I’ve sawed through bones, took my heart out my body / Have you forgot me / Cause I’m longing for the time when time was non-existent / Kaleidoscope lines I envision / Combine our lives with a two-word sentence / You said I do but I did not listen.
Repeat Chorus
The cross I bear I wear for my protection, wear for my protection / I’m bending and I’m searching for connections, searching for connection / I barely recognize my own reflection, my own reflection / ‘Cause all I ever wanted was acceptance / I fear rejection.
Repeat Chorus
