Lansing Community College will host the Malcolm X Symposium next week to celebrate Black History Awareness and its 2020 national theme, African Americans and the Vote. The event will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in the Michigan Room. It is free and open to the public.

Attendees will hear inspirational words from LCC Trustee Angela Mathews as well as Barbara Roberts Mason, the first African American woman elected to state office. Dr. Eugene Cain will speak on the history of voting in the south and Dr. Maxine Hankins Cain will share a presentation on Fannie Lou Hamer, the founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.

LCC students will also speak about student involvement in voter registration. Local dance troop African Masquerade Dancers will give a special performance to round out the evening.
