Brantley Gilbert and Lindsay Ell's smash hit single "What Happens in a Small Town" has topped Billboard's Country Airplay chart. The song rose two positions on the chart, from No. 3 to No. 1, to claim the penthouse during its 48th week on the chart.

"What Happens in a Small Town" saw an increase of 12 percent in audience impressions, to bring its total to 37.1 million, according to Billboard. It's an exciting success for Gilbert, who has not seen the top of the Country Airplay chart since 2015 when his song "One Hell of an Amen" lead the tally. Gilbert has earned five total chart toppers on the Country Airplay chart since his debut hit "Country Must Be Country Wide."

"What Happens in a Small Town" is Ell's first No. 1 on the chart. The song is also a huge success for Ell, whose previous highest-peaking single was "Criminal" when it reached No. 19 on the chart.

After learning about his latest chart-topping single, Gilbert opened up to Billboard about his excitement for the song and Ell, saying, "I couldn't be more proud of this No. 1. I'm especially excited for Lindsay, it being her first, and I hope I can speak for us both when I say that we couldn't have done it without our amazing fans, our incredible teams and, of course, country radio."

"What Happens in a Small Town" comes from Gilbert's latest album, Fire & Brimstone, which topped Billboard's Top Country Albums chart in October. The song was penned by Brock Berryhill, Josh Dunne and Rhett Akins. Gilbert will be embarking on his Fire't Up Tour in 2020; dates and tickets are available on his official website.
