On Monday, James Bristle and a buddy of his were digging in a field, on his farm in Lima Township, near Chelsea, when they hit what they thought was an old fence post. It wasn't.

Turns out they had just dug up the rib bone of a woolly mammoth. According to MLive.com, on Tuesday, James called the University of Michigan and they put him in contact with Professor Dan Fisher. Fisher came out to the farm on Wednesday and confirmed it was a mammoth. On Thursday they got a backhoe and dug it up. They got a lot of the skeleton, including the skull with the tusks still attached. Waaay cool.

This is a big deal because not many woolly mammoths have been dug up in Michigan - mastadon skeletons are much more common. What's the difference? Click here.
