The FBI is investigating the theft of CORN SEED from farm fields in Iowa. The seed was a strain that DuPont Pioneer had genetically modified and patented.

According to the Des Moines Register, two Chinese citizens are accused of planning to smuggle seeds back to China so they could be counterfeited. The FBI considers this a threat to national security. Why spend all that money on research when you can just do your own harvesting on one of our farms and send some home to be copied?

And apparently, these guys weren't the cagiest spies. One "spy" got caught when a DuPont Pioneer field manager caught him digging in one of their test fields in Iowa. Then the guy lied and told the field manager that he was a scientist at the University of Iowa.

Smooth. If convicted, they could get ten years in prison. Hopefully, eating cornbread and watching "Field of Dreams" every night.
