According to the Washington Post, the White House announced yesterday (Monday), that Corporal Kyle Carpenter will be the next recipient of the Medal of Honor. Carpenter will be the second living Marine, and the fifteenth soldier overall, to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

On Nov. 21, 2010, in southern Afghanistan, then Lance Corporal Carpenter fell on a grenade to protect a friend and fellow Marine. Both were horribly injured, but survived. The military knew about his heroics, but it takes "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Everybody knew what happened, but there were no eyewitnesses except for Carpenter and his friend. Carpenter didn't remember enough about the attack and his friend suffered brain damage that prevented him from speaking. After an exhaustive investigation, the Marines announced in March that he would get the award and the White House made it official yesterday.

Monday, of course, is Memorial Day - let's all take a moment to thank the men and women who have given so much for our freedom - in some cases, everything.
