Thomas Rhett and wife Lauren Akins recently broke the big news that they are expecting not one, but two babies in 2017! The couple, who is set to adopt a baby from Africa while Lauren is simultaneously carrying a little bundle of joy, open up in a new interview about keeping the news under wraps.

The country star and his wife tell People that keeping the secret on the 2017 Grammy Awards red carpet on Sunday (Feb. 12) was a challenge. “To say that we’re excited to finally be able to talk about it is an understatement,” Lauren says, revealing that she selected the elegant, tool-laden gown to hide her baby bump and was experiencing pregnancy sickness on the way to the big show.

“It was almost impossible to not mention it during interviews on the carpet,” Rhett adds, saying they wanted to wait to share the news into Lauren's first trimester and until they were far enough into the adoption process that they knew it would be successful.

The young couple announced the exciting news via social media Wednesday (Feb. 15). In an Instagram post, the expecting parents excitedly hold giant gold balloons that spell out the word "Baby." "We are so happy to announce that we are pregnant and we are in the process of adopting a child from Africa! Safe to say life is about to get crazy!" Rhett writes.

The singer was nominated for Best Country Song at the 59th annual awards show for "Die a Happy Man," which was written about his wife. Tim McGraw's "Humble and Kind" took home the trophy for the category. Rhett also presented the award for Best Country Solo Performance with former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello to Maren Morris for "My Church." His wife watched from the audience while fighting off all too familiar pregnancy sickness.

"On our way to the Grammys, Thomas Rhett was like, 'Honey, you look beautiful,'" she shares, "and I had this look on my face and he was like, 'Do you feel sick?' I was like, ‘Yeah — and I’m just praying I’m not about to throw up again before we go on the red carpet!'"

Thankfully, no one noticed the saltines in her purse or the secret would have spilled. The biological baby is set to arrive in August. They're hoping to have the adoption finalized before that. Rhett's Home Team Tour begins on Feb. 23. In June he'll headline Country Jam in Grand Junction, Colo.
