Tara, from St. Johns asked, "What island did the now extinct Elephant Bird come from?"

We thought the Elephant Bird might have been a native of the Galapagos Islands. Of course, that was after we considered Mackinac, Gilligan's and Treasure Island (the casino in Las Vegas - not the acclaimed novel by Robert Louis Stevenson) The answer was actually the island of Madagascar, which is a couple of hundred miles off the eastern coast of Africa.

The Elephant Bird was quite impressive. According to messybeast.com, it stood 10 feet tall and weighed almost 1000 pounds. And laid eggs that were a foot long and 200 times bigger than a chicken egg.
