Today (February 2nd) was declared "Chris Kyle Day" in Texas, by Governor Greg Abbott. It was on Feb. 2, 2013 that Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield, were killed, at a North Texas shooting range, allegedly by a former Marine, who Chris and Chad were trying to help. Eddie Ray Routh will go on trial for the murders on Feb. 11th.

A petition is now online calling for Chris to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Typically, the Medal of Honor is awarded for a specific act of bravery and the nomination comes from a member of congress, or someone in the military. After the nomination process, there's usually an investigation by the military to gather the facts about the event in question. The petition calls for the medal to be awarded to Chris, "for his four tours to Iraq which saved hundreds and possibly thousands of US soldiers lives".

"American Sniper", the movie based on Chris' life, has been number one at the box office for the last three weeks and is now the highest grossing "war-themed" movie, ever.

I'd be interested in everybody's opinion about this, but in particular, what veterans and active duty men and women think about the thought of giving Chris Kyle the Medal of Honor. My opinion is (and you know I'm a big Chris Kyle fan) that the Medal of Honor process has worked well for the past 150 years and should still be given for specific acts of bravery. There's no question he saved a lot of soldier's lives (IMO) and if someone can narrow it down to one event, then have at it.
