Officials sent out a NIXLE Alert this morning asking citizens and motorists to avoid the downtown area of Mason today (Tuesday, 10/4) between 1pm and 8pm. If you didn't know, here's why the request is being sent out...

According to the Lansing State Journal, filming will be taking place this week in Mason for a new movie about the 1967 riots in Detroit. Officials say that a trial following those riots was held at the Ingham County Courthouse. According to the LSJ, the film, which has the working name of “Untitled Detroit Project,” is scheduled for release sometime next year and will feature some big names like John Krasinski, formerly of “The Office” and John Boyega of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” as well as Jacob Latimore, Algee Smith, Will Poulter, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack Reynor, Hannah Smith and Ben O’Toole. (There's no official word on if any of those stars will actually be in Mason.)

Here's what you need to know:

  • The courthouse, including the clerk's office, will be open during filming. However, Clerk Barb Byrum said that customers might find the Lansing site more convenient because of parking restrictions in Mason.
  • Filming will center around the Courthouse Square in Mason.
  • Several roads will be affected/closed for the filming including Jefferson Street-between East Columbia Street to just south of Ash Street; Sycamore Street, Maple Street, and Ash Street (M-36) all between Park Street and Barnes Street; and Barnes Street between Sycamore Street to just south of Ash Street.
