The Soo Locks are shut down for the season. The locks always shut down for maintenance on January 15th. They'll reopen on March 25th. According to MLive.com, the last ship through last night was the 664-foot Canadian freighter, The Manitoulin.

The bad part - somebody (the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) has to do maintenance on the locks. In the middle of winter. In Sault Ste. Marie. If you wanna know how to dress warm, I'd talk to those people. The locks will be undergoing some major rehabilitation in the next few years.

The good part - the locks will be back in full operation this summer, so you can sit there all day and watch the freighters go through. The one time we were up there, I would've done just that, but Michelle and the kids were hungry or something. Imagine that.
