Navy SEAL Senior Chief Petty Officer Edward C. Byers Jr. will be awarded the Medal of Honor today, at the White House. According to Stars and Stripes, Senior Chief Byers is from a small town south of Toledo, just a couple hours drive away from Lansing. He'll receive the award for actions taken during a mission in December of 2012 to rescue an American doctor, who had been kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

And, for a change, Senior Chief Byers will not be writing a book about it. ""I have no plans in the future to write a book or do a movie or anything like that. It’s not what I believe in.”

Here's the story. And check out the video of him telling the story of how that mission unfolded. A mission that he remembers not for his own actions, but for the loss of one of his friends.
