The Michigan DNR says we have a little more than 600 wolves living in the U.P.

There was some worry that, with the low deer population in the U.P., there might be a decline in the wolf population. But those fears were unfounded. In 2014 there were 636 wolves counted. This winter they estimate the population at 618. Not bad for a lot less venison running around.

According to MLive.com, state researchers say the wolf population is viable and stable.

And while there have been two confirmed cases, in recent years, of wolves in the lower peninsula, the state doesn't think there are breeding packs "below the bridge".
