According to the Detroit Free Press, opening day of firearm deer season in the U.P. was better this year than last. And that's not saying much, but it's a step in the right direction.

Last year, some parts of the U.P. had two or three feet of snow on the ground, making it tough on the deer and tough for the hunters to get back into the areas they wanted to hunt. This year, they had almost as warm an opening day as we did down here. And the DNR reports the numbers of checked deer were up.

Here's my totally unscientific prediction for harvest numbers on opening day in the Lower Peninsula: more shooting = higher harvest. I heard a lot more shots on opening day in Clinton County this year than last.

Me? I'm still waiting.
