Awkward.

Laura Smith - Velazquez, originally from Dorr, Michigan (south of Grand Rapids) may be going to Mars. To live. Forever. Without her husband Matthew.

As you may have heard, a Dutch company called Mars One is looking for 24 people to go ONE WAY to colonize Mars starting in 2024. According to MLive.com, out of 200,000 people who applied to be one of those 24, Laura is one of 100 finalists. Her husband Matthew applied also, but didn't make the cut (and I don't know him - but I'd like to know why not). Laura and Matthew live in Maryland now, where Laura works for Rockwell-Collins, a company that produces aviation avionics - the instruments used to provide information in aircraft cockpits.

I have to say, I love her attitude about the risks involved. Laura says, "You have to have a certain level of risk-taking," she said. "You can die walking out your front door, in a car accident, whatever. ... You can't plan for everything because there are so many unknowns.

Laura isn't going just yet - there are still some hurdles before she's on the final list of 24.

As for Matthew. No more shopping trips and that whole house can be your man-cave, so...sweet, right?
