Actor Verne Troyer, best known for his role as "Mini Me" in the Austin Powers movies has passed away at the age of 49. Verne graduated from Centreville High School, in southwestern Michigan, in 1987. According to TMZ, Verne had been on some form of life support since he was taken to the hospital earlier this month. Earlier in April, police had received a call that Verne was drunk and suicidal, and he was treated for possible alcohol poisoning.

On a personal note, I actually went to high school with Verne. He was a couple of years older than me and I can remember there were many mornings when I was out waiting for the bus, that I saw Verne drive by on his way to school. Yes, he drove a car. He had special extensions made for his car that would allow him to reach the pedals. Verne was a fun person to be around in high school. (My brother went to Florida with him on spring break in high school...but I never heard any of the stories.) I remember him asking people at school to help lift him up so he could get a drink out of the drinking fountain. He was the team manager for the wrestling team and Verne was also a representative one year for, I believe, our Homecoming court. (It could have been Winterfest, though....I'm not positive and I can't find my yearbook to double-check.) My thoughts and prayers go out to Verne's family and many friends.
